Dixie’s Story

Dixie came into our care after she was found lying on the roadside, visibly suffering, with tears in her eyes and severe swelling in her front leg. She was in immense pain, and it was clear she needed urgent help. Concerned that the swelling could be cancer, Animal Services immediately arranged for emergency radiographs of her injured limb and chest to understand the severity of her condition.

The results were heartbreaking. The imaging confirmed that Dixie was suffering from osteosarcoma, a highly aggressive and extremely painful form of bone cancer. Despite the devastating diagnosis, there was a small moment of hope — her chest scans showed no signs of cancer spread at that time. Acting quickly, Animal Services scheduled surgery to amputate the affected limb in an effort to relieve her pain and give her a chance at recovery.

Following surgery, Dixie was placed in a warm and loving foster home where she could heal in comfort. Sadly, further lab testing later revealed that the cancer had progressed. A canine oncologist shared the difficult news that Dixie only had a limited time left to live. From that moment on, the focus shifted from treatment to compassion.

Today, Dixie is living in a hospice foster home, surrounded by love, gentle care, and comfort. Every day, she is given affection, dignity, and peace, ensuring that her remaining time is filled with warmth rather than pain. Dixie’s journey reminds us that even when healing isn’t possible, love, comfort, and kindness can still make all the difference.
